Data center engineering infrastructure solutions

An important functional unit of a data center is the engineering infrastructure that creates optimum conditions for the operation of data processing and storage systems and communications.

It comprises multiple varied systems that can be classified into four groups:
Life-support systems: key data center systems whose combined cost may reach 70% of a data center construction budget. This group includes power networks (transformer substations, switchboards, automatic throw-over devices), guaranteed and uninterrupted power supply systems, cooling and ventilation systems.
Security systems: security and fire alarm, access control and management, video surveillance, automatic fire suppression and smoke removal, grounding and lighting protection.
Passive hardware: racks for servers and network equipment, copper and optic fiber communication lines, cable channels system, raised floor, protective shielding of server rooms.
Monitoring and control: centralized remote monitoring system, automation and centralization of control. Monitoring and control systems are instrumental to locating malfunctions, reducing qualification requirements for staff and manpower, and come with built-in methods for handling emergencies.
De Novo offers a vast range of services in building data centers, the key ones being engineering and consulting services of planning and design nature, conducting technical and economic feasibility studies, preparing recommendations for data center organization and management, scheduled servicing and operation.
Each data center project has its own specifics due to architectural, construction, and energy limitations of buildings, and the scope and complexity of tasks.

Preliminary assessment. Technical examination
This stage addresses general organizational issues. We identify and appoint officers and performers for the project, including our specialists and those of the client. As work progresses, we formulate or revise the technical assignment, gather and systematize in formation on the facility, lay down boundaries of responsibility, and arrive at the project implementation timeframe. This stage is important in that any subsequent change to technical assignment requirements requires changes to the designs of multiple engineering subsystems.

Design
Design is carried out in keeping with the approved technical assignment. Depending on the job complexity, design is carried out in one or several stages (concept development, rough design, detailed designs). The phased nature of design makes it possible to work out a technical and economic solution that best meets the client's needs.
In developing the engineering infrastructure for a data center, De Novo experts adhere to national and international regulations, requirements for IT hardware, and own data center construction procedures.

Deployment and testing
The deployment timeframe is highly dependent on:
  • the quality of design of all engineering subsystems and their interoperability ensured at the design stage;
  • the choice of an optimum schedule for the installation of subsystems.
Key issues addressed at this stage:
  • technical supervision to ensure proper quality and scope of work,
  • management of installation crews,
  • coordinated interaction with the client’s services responsible for construction and technical servicing,
  • configuring and testing the hardware and software of individual subsystems,
  • training client staff responsible for maintenance.

Industrial launch
The close interoperability of engineering subsystems requires planning the industrial launch of subsystems. It is also important to remember that some systems require to be loaded by at least 30% in order to operate normally. Abnormal operation of hardware shortens its service life.

Servicing
The ability to maintain high accessibility of the engineering infrastructure depends on servicing possibilities envisioned at the design stage (project topology and technical specifics of hardware) and a complex of preliminary servicing measures.
