IT-Infrastructure Transformation and Optimization

Designed to increase the effectiveness of computing resources, De Novo solutions among other things help control the utilization ratio. It is the ratio between the actual and used hardware capacity. For example, the hard drive storing a business application has 100 Gb of disk space; the application occupies 12 Gb, with the remaining space left unoccupied (for security reasons, for example). This hard drive has a utilization ratio of 12%. It can be increased by buying a smaller hard drive (if available on the market) or by providing the remaining 88 Gb for other needs (which can increase security risks). Alternatively, virtualization tools can be used. The latter, besides creating a more rational distribution of space on hard drives, can distribute other computing resources: processing power, RAM, communication channels, and the like. By using virtualization technologies an enterprise can economize on buying additional hardware and software licenses or building new data centers (including costly infrastructure), lower energy consumption, and improve other indicators.

These solutions make it possible to spread the load among several servers or divide computing capacity into several isolated environments with each one of them serving its own business application (or a group of business applications). Virtualization tools will allocate computing capacity according to the needs and priorities of applications, making the most effective use of resources and bringing the utilization coefficient to the comfortable 70-80%. The required quantity of hardware will be determined not by the quantity of the required isolated operating environments, but by the actual resource needs of business applications.

Computing infrastructure consolidation and virtualization. Active development of the computing infrastructure at an average Ukrainian enterprise can be conventionally divided into two stages: quantitative and qualitative. At stage one, the enterprise accumulates computing capacity, increasing the number of workstations and servers and installing new network hardware. At some point in its development the IT department faces a situation where the purchase of a new server, which would previously successfully meet continued growth needs, no longer produces the desired result. Moreover, as computing capacity is increased further still, the IT infrastructure becomes less and less manageable. This leads to a paradoxical situation. The combined hardware resources at the disposal of the enterprise are more than sufficient to meet the needs of business applications for 1-2 years to come. Still, new hardware purchases never stop. The reason behind this is the absence of a technology that would make the maximum effective use of available resources. Computing infrastructure consolidation and virtualization systems provide a solution to this problem and a basis for continued development of IT systems. Workstation virtualization. The workstation virtualization technology is the most effective for companies with a decentralized IT infrastructure and enterprises with a large number of business users. Workstation virtualization solutions are designed to transfer the bulk of data and processing to a single central reserved data center. In this model, workstation hardware is used only to input and output data processed at the data center. Other than minimizing the cost of setting up local IT infrastructures, workstation virtualization tools raise the level of data security (local PCs do not store commercially sensitive information), the overall fail safety of the company’s information environment, while significantly lowering the requirements for the size and qualifications of the IT workforce at remote offices.
