At stage one, the enterprise accumulates computing capacity, increasing the number of workstations and servers and installing new network hardware. At some point in its development the IT department faces a situation where the purchase of a new server, which would previously successfully meet continued growth needs, no longer produces the desired result. Moreover, as computing capacity is increased further still, the IT infrastructure becomes less and less manageable.
